Windows Blue Screen After Update (Fix It Now)

Updated Feb 13, 2026

⚠️ Immediate Fix

BSOD right after an update restarts? The new driver is conflicting. Boot into WinRE (interrupt boot 3 times by holding power). Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced > Uninstall Updates > Uninstall latest Quality Update. This removes the patch but keeps your data, fixing the crash instantly.

Why This Happens

  • Driver Conflict: Update installed a generic driver that hates your hardware.
  • Corrupt Install: Power blinked during install.
  • Incompatible App: Antivirus fought the update.

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Uninstall Update (WinRE): As described above. This is the #1 fix.
  2. System Restore: In WinRE, select System Restore. Choose the restore point labeled "Windows Update". This rolls back everything to 1 hour ago.
  3. Safe Mode: If Uninstall fails, go to Startup Settings > Restart > Press 4 for Safe Mode. Once in, Device Manager > Roll Back Driver on your GPU.
  4. Disable Automatic Restart: To see the error code, go to Advanced System Settings > Startup and Recovery > Uncheck "Automatically restart".

When to Stop

If you see "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" or "INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE", your hard drive file system is damaged. Try `chkdsk /f /r c:` from command prompt. If that fails, the drive needs replacement.
